Herpes is a viral infection which is caused by herpes simplex virus. It is an STD caused by a virus instead of bacteria. There are two types of HSV i.e. herpes simplex virus: Type I and Type II. In the recent past, it was thought that these different types of HSV caused different types of problems. Type I was thought to cause cold sores on the mouth and lips, while Type II caused genital herpes. In genital herpes, the sores will form around the penis or vagina area of the body. In cold sore or we can call it as oral herpes, the sore will appear in and around the mouth. Type II HSV cases tend to have worse symptoms and more frequent outbreaks as compared to Type I HSV cases. Most cases of genital herpes are caused by HSV-2 (herpes simplex virus type-2) and oral herpes is caused by HSV-1 (herpes simplex virus type-1).
The sign and systems of genital herpes is that, painful genital lesions or sores which look like small blisters occur from time to time on the genitals. The blisters or sores occur when the herpes virus, which lives deep inside the nerves during inactive periods, travels down from the nerves to the skin. Itching or pain can be felt before the appearance of herpes blisters. These blisters are not permanent. When the blisters come, it is called an “outbreak”.
An outbreak commonly takes about two- three weeks to completely heal. It has many phases. The First phase is inflammation or swelling, and the part or we can say, the area where the outbreak is occurring will become red, itchy and uncomfortable. The blisters are small fluid-filled bumps on the skin. In the next phase, the blister will result in ulcers. The ulcers then begin to dry out and crust or scab over with pale yellow color. Finally the skin heals and returns to normal appearance after 2-3 weeks.
Typically outbreaks occur most frequently during the first year, after getting the infection. It is rarely possible for someone to be infected and never have an outbreak. The first outbreak will take around 30 days to heal completely.
Outbreaks are worsened by stress, and become more likely to appear, when your body gets low immune system. Outbreaks can occur in condition like physical stresses, other illness, sleep deprivation, menstruation, and too much drinking or drugging. Outbreaks can also occur in response to emotional stresses like overwork, relationship problems, or other emotional issues.
As we all know, herpes is an STD i.e. sexually transmitted disease, so a person should be very careful when choosing sexual partners and should use protection during sexual activity. A herpes patient can easily transmit their infection to their partner through vaginal or anal intercourse. It is also possible for a person who has oral herpes can pass genital herpes to sexual partners around the penis or vagina area or vice versa.
It has been proven that the oral herpes is caused by the HSV-1 (herpes simplex virus type-1) and genital herpes is caused by HSV-2 (herpes simplex virus type-2). Most of the 80% case of herpes are genital herpes and caused by herpes simplex virus-2 (HSV-2) and rest 20% cases are caused by herpes simplex virus-1 (HSV-1).
